We would like you to join us in donating some of you computers spare to time in helping to find solutions and cures for By going to the World Community Grid site and downloading a small program to put to work your computers extra time in helping solve these issues, you will be helping science and supporting our community. Please join our team once you have your account setup, our team name is 'SoCalSportRiders.com'.

I've been running Distributed net for years...I was running the RC5-64 for the last 3 years, but that key crack challenge is so huge it could take another 30 years to find the key...so I finally said eff that pointless adventure and turned off the RC5 function and activated the cruncher to work on OGR crunching. That's Optimal Golomb Ruler.

In mathematics, the term "Golomb Ruler" refers to a set of non-negative integers such that no two distinct pairs of numbers from the set have the same difference. Conceptually, this is similar to a ruler constructed in such a way that no two pairs of marks measure the same distance. An Optimal Golomb Ruler (OGR) is the shortest Golomb Ruler possible for a given number of marks. However, finding (and proving) OGR's becomes exponentially more difficult as the number of marks increases, and it is for this reason that we have turned to the web for help in finding the OGR's with 24 and more marks.

Golomb rulers are named after Dr. Solomon W. Golomb, a professor of Mathematics with a special interest in combinatorial analysis, number theory, coding theory and communications. Dr. Golomb also has an interest in mathematical games and puzzles, having been a contributer to many columns in the Scientific American "Mathematical Games". OGR's have many applications including sensor placements for X-ray crystallography and radio astronomy. Golomb rulers can also play a significant role in combinatorics, coding theory and communications, and Dr. Golomb was one of the first to analyze them for use in these areas.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golomb_ruler for more info.

I've got my Athlon 2.8G and Laptop P3-1.2G running almost all the time. It only uses free clock cycles, so no slowing of any applications. It also auto shuts off on the laptop upon loss of AC power, and also shuts off when scandisk is running.

me stats-- catchin up fast in the OGR list http://stats.distributed.net/participant/p...5&id=216051

I remebered I had run WCG for a while a few years ago, so I found my login and added myself to your group, hopefully that bumps our stats up a bit tongue.gif

Yup, on the team.

Not rich, poor as shit. I got the guts of this computer for free from my last job. Decommissioned hardware. thumbup.gif Its an old server/high end desktop (has sound built in). It also has SCSI built in but SCSI and IDE don't play nice together so its all IDE now. I'd like to find some better CPUs for it and get some more ram, I think it can handle up to 2.8ghz CPUs and 4 gigs of ram.

I wish i knew what you guys are talking about hmm.gif

Checked out the forums and I have now uninstalled the UD client and instead have gone with the BOINC client since it can utilize the dual CPUs in my machine. Task Manager shows both CPUs cranking away now smile.gif

Will, are the dual CPU systems that you have listed in the first post Windows or some for of *nix?

Think I might get some more of my systems up and running just to put them into the game here.

The short story for those that have never seen this before...

Its called Distributed Computing. There are computations that require MASSIVE super computers to solve. These SuperComputers cost hundreds of millions of dollars and are capable of millions of computations per second. They're used to look for oil, and plot the planetary rotations and stuff like that. They also have waiting lists like a year or two long, and cost a fuck ton of cash to use.

So some people realized that they could break these super huge mathematical computations down into small jobs. Jobs small enough that a normal desktop computer could run the job, and send the results back to the scientists. So instead of submitting a HUGE job to a massive SuperComputer, they take a HUGE job and break it into a bunch of smaller jobs and people who volunteer to help, get sent the small jobs to run on their home machines. The data is then re-assembled into the main job once its completed.

There are a lot of these programs around. I know SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) has one, I am doing Protein Folding, which helps scientists understand how proteins fold and separate. I forget what WCG is, but most of them are computations to figure out how the human body and cells work, so as to better combat diseases that affect humans like cancer, Alzheimer's, AIDS, and stuff like that.

Good brief description of what this thread is about Mike thumbup.gif
william
DOH! Thanks Mike, sometimes I assume too much tongue.gif

Todd, those systems are my work servers running a flavor of Windoze biggrin.gif

I would hope more people would like to join in on this I think it would be pretty cool to have a large number of points from a Motorcycle club...haven't seen that yet tongue.gif It's always scientists, students or another flavor of g33ks running this distributed software.

As Mike stated, Super computers (such as the CREY) cost millions of dollars and are expensive to operate. Fact is there are millions of computers left on, connected to high speed lines (not a requirement, but helps) that have 98% or more of the CPU doing nothing. That is to say an on computer connected to the net, not doing jack schitt, not even playing solitaire.

So if you took 60% of all the time (which is what this little program does) the computer sits on its butt and use that time to crunch numbers to give back to a central database more medical research and other world problems can be solved faster.

Will that run up my electric bill? You're computer just sitting there will do that, so put it to work or turn it off.

Will it hinder my computer when I use it? No, it only will use the processor time if no active application is using it, its very efficient in this task.

I have no idea how to operate it? Well if you go to the original link, it will tell you what to do, its as simple as downloading and clicking next a few times then filling out 4-5 spaces to get an account.

How do I join the SoCal team? Once you have an account go back to the http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org page and click on "My Grid" and on the left side click on "My Team" then "Find a team", then just search for SoCalSportRiders.com and your done.

Remember this helps mankind (if not to noble to say) with your computer that you will most likely upgrade or replace before it breaks, so why not put it to good use?

I signed up, and am glad I can help mankind.

Ok just joined the Team !!!

When I get home will see if I can add it to my Linux Boinc manager woot.gif

I all ready use BOINC for setiathome and four others from that site...

Glad I can help out !!!

?seti@home?, wow that's a blast from the past...I ran that for a couple years....about idunno it seems like 10 years ago, I'm surprised and yet not so surprised that project still exsists.
william
I converted....I figure we aren't getting any serious responses from space in the past 5 years, so its time to help out our own medical personal on this planet so we may survive long enough to meet them if they show tongue.gif

Thanks Jim!

I need to get off my butt and get my linux cluster up and running one of these days.... Glad I can lend a helping hand voldar02.gif

Interesting article Fred...long read, but interesting. Almost confirms the waste of money, which is why I changed projects hmm.gif

Besides if we find aliens, I am sure this would be the outcome

The alien 'Kanamit' is, well was a family friend from way back, Richard Kiel (he played Jaws in James Bond 007 flick Moonraker) I'll have to get my mom to dig out the old photos, I have a picture of him and I when I was a kid.

I'd ike to help out but I usually turn my comp off when I'm done with it, so do my roomates. Is this something that requires me to leave my comp on all the time?
Schwaggy
You don't have to leave it on, it will just run whenever your system is up. You'll process a lot more data if you leave it on all the time, however, if yer pinchin' pennies, your monthly elec bill will be a buck or two higher.
Fred S
OK, I'm in.
william
cool, thanks
